Dry Needling is available at both our Gold Coast Physiotherapy clinics – Burleigh Heads & Broadbeach

Dry needling is another technique used by our physiotherapists. This technique involves the use of acupuncture needles to stimulate trigger points in the muscle and connective tissue. A trigger point is an area of the muscle which is ‘knotted’ and tends to be quite painful and can refer pain to other surrounding areas. Dry needling of a trigger point will elicit a twitch response, which is an involuntary reflex that causes the tight muscle fibres to contract. This contraction is followed by the muscle relaxing, which decreases pain and allows for better movement of the affected area.

Conditions Dry Needling can help with

  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Tendon and muscle pain
  • Muscle tightness
  • Nerve pain by relaxing the muscles around the nerve

What to Expect

Your physio will ask for your permission before needling. Please tell them if you are on any blood-thinning medication or have any allergies. They will have asked your medical history on your initial visit to check for any underlying conditions.

The muscle may ache during and/or after needling. It may twitch during needling.
